THE SYLLABUS

What you’ll learn

Over two days you build a real stretch of wall from the ground up, following the traditional craft syllabus of the Dry Stone Walling Association:

  • Health and safety with stone
  • Stripping out an old wall
  • Setting frames and lines
  • Preparing and laying foundations
  • Building the first lift
  • Placing through stones
  • Building the second lift
  • Placing copestones

By the end of the weekend you’ll have worked every stage of a traditional dry stone wall — and the wall you build stays in the landscape.

WHAT TO KNOW

Course essentials

No experience needed. The two-day beginners’ workshop is designed for complete newcomers as well as those returning to develop their skills.

Ages 16 and over. All walling tools and equipment are provided — work gloves are required (a supply of spares is available if you don’t bring your own).

Dress for the outdoors. The course is taught outside: bring warm layers, waterproofs, sturdy boots, a hat and sun cream.

Lunch. Bring a packed lunch and drinks for both days.

Joining instructions with the venue address, parking and facilities are emailed after booking.

WHY LEARN WITH US

A course on the official DSWA Cotswold Branch training calendar, taught by working professional wallers in groups of no more than twelve — at a working Cotswold quarry, not a car park. The wall you help build stays in the landscape.
