QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an official course?

The course is listed on the official DSWA Cotswold Branch training calendar and taught to the DSWA beginners syllabus. Richard Gray is a professional member of the Dry Stone Walling Association.

Do I need any experience to join a dry stone walling course?

No. The two-day Introduction workshop is designed for complete beginners. You’ll learn stone selection, wall structure and traditional building techniques from the ground up, in a group of no more than twelve.

Who teaches the workshops?

Workshops are taught by Richard Gray — The Cotswold Waller, a professional member of the Dry Stone Walling Association, who has built and restored walls across Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds since 2006 — and Eric Sainvet of ES Stonework; sometimes together, sometimes individually, always in groups of no more than twelve.

Where are the courses held?

At working quarry and countryside venues in Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds. Full directions, including the venue address, come with your joining instructions.

How much does a course cost?

The two-day Introduction to Dry Stone Walling workshop is £195 per person, including all tools, equipment and instruction.

What should I bring?

Work or gardening gloves, outdoor clothing and sturdy boots, waterproofs, a packed lunch and drinks. Everything else is provided.

How old do I have to be?

Participants must be 16 or over.

Is it physically demanding?

Walling is hands-on outdoor work, but it’s worked at a considered pace and suits a wide range of fitness levels. Stones are lifted, not hauled — good technique matters more than strength.

Can I book a private course or a gift for someone?

Yes — one-to-one tuition and private group sessions can be arranged. Get in touch to discuss dates.
